Retainers

Retainers may be removable or fixed. They hold your teeth in their new, correct positions after your teeth have been straightened. Your orthodontist will instruct you on how to care for your retainer and about the duration of the wear. Wearing your retainer as directed is crucial to prevent regression of your treatment.

How to Care for Your Retainers

  • Clean your retainers with antibacterial hand soap - NO toothpaste, which can scratch the finish. If you are getting tartar build up, you can use denture cleaner.
  • Do not use boiling water or leave your retainers in a hot car. Heat can warp them.
  • NEVER wrap your retainers in a tissue or napkin - they could easily be thrown away.
  • Keep your retainers away from pets! Dogs love to chew up retainers.
  • You may only drink water while wearing retainers. Tea, coffee, and soda can cause stains and lead to dacay.
  • No food, gum or candy while wearing retainers.
  • Please wear your retainers 24/7 for the first 6 month. After 6 months, wear retainers every single night while sleeping.
  • If your retainers begin to feel loose, please call and come in. We can adjust them.
  • If anything goes wrong, please call and come in. We don't want anything to happen to your terrific smile!
